Academic years & terms

The school year as a structure, not a folder name.

Basic plan and above

Why it matters

01

Built around the Kenyan three-term year

Terms are first-class records with start and end dates. Attendance, exams, fees and reporting are all scoped to a term, which is the unit Kenyan schools actually plan and budget in.

02

Promotion as one deliberate act

At the end of the year the school promotes learners in bulk, with repeats and withdrawals handled as exceptions. Last year's records stay exactly as they were.

Almost everything a school records answers the question “when?” with a term rather than a date. A learner sat that exam in Term 2. Those fees were for Term 1. That attendance rate was for last term.

Msomi makes the academic year and its terms explicit records with real dates, and scopes academic data to them. That is what makes it possible to compare this term with the same term last year, to bill termly, and to produce a report that covers the right period without anyone filtering by date range.

The end of the year

Promotion is a single deliberate operation. The school promotes learners in bulk and handles repeats, transfers and withdrawals as exceptions. Because enrolment is recorded per year rather than overwritten, last year’s class lists, marks and reports remain exactly as they were.

See Academic calendar working on your school data

A demo runs about forty minutes and uses your own class lists, frameworks and grading — so you are looking at your school rather than a sample database.

Or try it first — the Trial tier gives you a full term, free, with every module unlocked.
