Most parents’ relationship with their child’s school is built on two documents a year and a phone call to the office when something seems wrong. By the time a report card raises a problem, a term has passed.

Msomi is designed to close that gap without adding to anyone’s workload, because none of the information it sends is written specially for parents. Attendance is recorded because the school takes a register. Results exist because teachers enter marks. The fee balance is derived from invoices. The bus alert comes from the driver confirming a manifest. Msomi simply routes what already exists to the people it concerns.

If you do not have a smartphone

You still get everything. Absence alerts, results notifications, fee reminders and bus notifications are all delivered by SMS to any handset. The app is a convenience, not a requirement — and no family is left less informed because of the phone they carry.

    If your child is marked absent without explanation, you are told the same morning — while it is still information you can act on, rather than at the end of term.

    An alert as the bus approaches your stop, confirmation when your child boards, and confirmation again when they arrive at school or are dropped off in the afternoon.

    Exam results as they are published, grades against the school's own scale, and the full termly report card — rather than one document in December that is the first you hear of a problem.

    Know what is owed, and what was paid

    A current fee statement, the payment history including M-Pesa transactions, and reminders before a deadline rather than a demand after it.

    Say who may collect your child, and change it when it changes

    You keep the list of adults allowed to collect your child — the school cannot know that today it is their aunt. Add somebody for one afternoon only, set a code they read out, and hear about it immediately if anyone else tries.

    See your boarder's pocket money without sending cash blind

    What you sent, what has been drawn and what is left, from the same app. Set a limit for the term so the money does not run out in week five.

    Support the homework

    Outstanding assignments and their due dates, so the answer to "do you have homework?" does not depend entirely on the answer you are given.

    One account for the whole family

    Children in different classes, or even at different Msomi schools, all sit under one sign-in. Adding another child uses a code sent to your own phone.

    Never miss a circular or a note home

    Homework notes, circulars and behaviour notes reach you directly and ask you to acknowledge them, not just read them. If you haven't, Msomi follows up — by push, then by SMS — until you have.
